Dying in her own home with her two daughters by her side, Ann Grant Lord (Vanessa Redgrave) calls out the name of the secret love of her life. It isn't the name of Constance (Natasha Richardson) and Nina's (Toni Collette) father. So they try to unravel the mystery of her past. Fifty years before, Ann Grant (Claire Danes) meets Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson) at the wedding of Lila Wittenborn (Mamie Gummer). Although they do not end up together, he would always be the one she gave her heart to. Disturbed by this revelation, the daughters ask Lila Wittenborn (Meryl Streep), now fifty years older, to recall what happened at her wedding. They hope this informaion will help her mother work through this great regret and fill in the missing pieces of this puzzle in their mother's life.
