Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham-Carter) is engaged to be married to Cecil (Daniel Day-Lewis) but starts to fear that her already conventional life is going to become a prison of repression. She seeks to travel abroad before she marries, but according to convention, she must be accompanied by chaperon Charlotte Bartlett (Maggie Smith) because young women should not travel alone. They go to Italy and upon arrival in Florence, they are disturbed that the room they are given does not have a view. A father and his son George Emerson (Julian Sands) insist the ladies take their room because they don't care about having a view. This puts Charlotte ill at ease because she doesn't want to be under obligation to these men, but she accepts. However, to her dismay, George's attention to Lucy make her chaperon job difficult. Soon they escape her to experience the passion of the Italian culture. So changed by her trip and her relationship to George, Lucy must decide what she is going to do about her engagement when she returns to England.
